At about 10 PM last night, December 7, police carried out a massive raid on a hammam (bathhouse) in the Ramsis area of Cairo, not far from the main railway station. They arrested many men — dozens, reportedly — and hauled them, stripped naked like concentration-camp inmates, to the trucks. Someone living nearby who watched the assault wrote on social media that “police together with Central Security forces attacked the bath.” (Central Security, Amn el-Merkezi, is an army force mainly composed of raw recruits. it takes over many policing duties in an increasingly militarized Egypt.) “40 people were arrested. Some were beaten up in the baths, and they were all arrested with no clothes.” He said “a female journalist and a cameraman” arrived “before they attacked the baths. She tried to enter and…

“Can’t remember the dates or the days, its same as today, bit I recall all the incidents as if It’s happening right now” that’s how Fatima Swae’d (Um El khier) from the Unrecognized Ramaya Village started her family’s story.

Ramada’s Case been an issue since 26 years ago, to be specific year 1986, a lot of hassles & law sues between the village’s residents & the Israeli Land Authority to evict the village & force the Ramaya’s people to leave their own land, in exchange of financial compensation that doesn’t give the land it justice, or an exchange for another piece of land, but nothing like home!

Ramaya’s Village located in Galilee, west of Karmiel city, most of houses is made of Tin, or metals the village got some farms for agriculture & raising animals as main source for food & living.

our families works mainly in farming, raising animals & chickens”, Um El Khier said “by the early years of my marriage we never bought anything, the land provided us with everything for our everyday meals, also the animals & chickens provided most of our needs, in the time of flood & winter, we had to visit the villages nearby to buy what we need, we used to walk it or by the assist of our farm animals, on daily bases I used to visit a nearby village to get fresh drinking water & walk back home”

The Israeli land Authority offers them substitute lands more less when it comes for size that they originally owned, and the building licenses offered by ILA designed to set families apart, tiring the community & families apart to avoid having Arab neighborhood, Adding to the uneven compensation.

The Acre price sat by ILA at it higher level won’t exceed 15000INS which is way less that the fair market price, ILA trying to drive a wedge between ramaya’s residents for example offers some of them a dead line to sign the eviction documents and whom won’t sign will not get construction permit, then give the people who signs a construction permit to those whom stood their grounds fall in fear & doubt about what’s next, to get them worried about their loses,

Um El Khier digressed “ I got married in 70’s, my husband is farmer & Sheppard, he bought this land from a family from Dier El Asad village to get started with his life, raise a family, all the lands around us now it was originally ours even the building over there, they didn’t even asked us one day we were shocked, they came with cars & trucks carrying the construction materials, we were few we couldn’t defend our own land while it’s been raped in front of our own eyes”

By year 1986 we received our first eviction note from the Israeli police ordering us to evict our own land, so we went to court and we provided the ownership document, which is a legally binding document, however till date we are still receiving those notifications periodically.

“ You Know that we don’t have a Mailbox, once postman arrives to Ramaya, he walks around till he finds us, actually sometimes he grabs a chair to rest & drink something cold,” she laughed

“Recently there were few activists been supporting us, in organizing demonstrations to claim our rights, writing about us to let the whole world knows about our cause and how Israel treating us as Arab citizens, each Friday there is a demonstration, each article published counts, May God be with us”

“ you know that we have a Jews neighbors, they never annoyed us there are a lot of families we are having a real good relation with, they eating with us & drinking our coffee but no one ever accepted to provide us with electricity, O” God they are afraid to lose their positions & jobs if they helped us, no one can ever believe that its 2014 and we don’t have electricity or utilities, I feel bad when I see all the building around us watching TV, that we can hear it over here and we only listing to the noise of the electricity generator that even can hardly provide enough power for the basic needs”

“ I have great hope in my children & grand children, they received high school education and grew up, few of them now are in university, all studied hard over the light of candles”

“They received their education in the schools located in villages nearby, they used to walk on foot to reach their school, and since there were no roads & still in winter they used to wear old shoe till they reach the main road then take it off and wear the new shoe for school, same on their way back home”

“ Teachers used to feel bitty on my kids, sometimes they used to bought them heavy coats, but they never got that my kids used to take it off while they are going home, as they used to walk it all the way home, the heat of walking such long distance made them take it off”

When I asked her about her feeling, she didn’t thought much about it, she is living it daily, she said “ you are having your own land but so many buildings built over it and because you are an Arab you are prohibited to do anything, people may die once but we are dying thousand times a day”

What about your hope?

“ My children are my only hope, they compensate me of the brutality that we are facing it daily, I have a hope of better future for all the human being no matter of his religion, race, the only thing matter is being human”
